EIGHT artists in the Tralee Municipal District area are to receive bursaries from the Kerry County Council Arts Office while Presentation Primary School in Tralee will receive a bursary under the Artists For Schools scheme.

The Arts Office attracted an unprecedented level of interest in their annual funding call out for 2025. Applications were open from November 27, 2024 to January 15, 2025 and in that time the Arts Office received 94 applications under the Individual Artist & Artist in Schools Bursaries.

The funding streams were adjudicated upon by an independent, expert panel and letters of offer were issued to each of the successful applicants. The independent adjudication panel were highly impressed with the calibre of the applications, awarding 29 Artist Bursaries to the value of €26,168.90.

The breakdown of applications received, and bursaries awarded is as follows:

• 56 applications for the Creative Work Development Bursary, 18 were successful.

• 12 applications for the Artist Retreat Bursary, 4 were successful.

• 8 applications for the Eamon Kelly Bursary, 1 was successful.

• 8 applications for the Further Arts Education Bursary, 3 were successful.

Bursaries are awarded to individual artists working in all artforms, who are from or based in the county. The Individual Artist Bursaries are broken down into the following categories: Creative Work Development, Further Arts Education, Artist Retreat, and the Eamon Kelly Bursary (for artists living in Killarney Municipal District).

Artists working in the following artforms are being supported through the Artist Bursaries: literature, visual art, theatre, film, music and opera. The breakdown of artists per MD is as follows: Tralee (8), Listowel (2), Killarney (4), Kenmare (5) and Castleisland/Corca Dhuibhne (9).

Artist in Schools Bursary supports schools to engage with a chosen artist or artform directly. 10 applications for the Artists in Schools Scheme were received, 3 were successful. The schools which were awarded funding are Presentation Primary School Tralee, Scoil Iognáid Rís Daingean Uí Chúis, and Scoil Naomh Erd Glenderry Ballyheigue.

Artist Bursaries are funded by Kerry County Council and the Arts Council of Ireland. This financial support from Kerry County Council aids the delivery of the Kerry Arts Strategy which supports arts delivery, engagement and development in Kerry.
