Bursary Description

The East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) invites eligible South African students to submit applications for the Bursary Programme for the academic year 2025.

Bursary application closing date is 27 January 2025 at 16:00.

The East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) is offering a bursary opportunity for individuals between the ages of 16 and 25 from the Eastern Cape. The bursary aims to promote the development of skills in Mathematics, Science, and Technology fields among disadvantaged learners from townships and villages in the Eastern Cape.

Bursary Objectives:

  • Encourage higher education in Mathematics, Science, and Technology fields.
  • Contribute to the development of scarce skills in the Eastern Cape region.

Bursary Criteria:

  1. Geographical Location:
    • Only residents from Eastern Cape townships and villages are eligible.
  2. Area of Study:
    • The bursary is for full-time undergraduate studies in Mathematics, Science, or Technology-related fields at a recognized South African university.
    • Applicants must be enrolled or have applied to a university and possess a University Acceptance letter.
  3. Financial Need:
    • The bursary is intended for financially disadvantaged learners. A financial needs assessment will be conducted for all shortlisted applicants.
  4. Academic Record:
    • Applicants must have at least 60% for Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy) and an average of 60% for all other subjects in their June or November 2024 examinations.
    • If the applicant has completed Grade 12, they must have obtained a 60% average for their final exams.
  5. Age:
    • Applicants should be between the ages of 16 and 25.

Bursary Benefits:

  • R50,000 bursary covering:
    • Registration and tuition fees
    • Prescribed books and study materials
    • Accommodation and meals in university residence

Bursary Conditions:

  • The bursary is renewable if the student maintains a 60% average.
  • The student must not hold any other bursary.
  • The bursary holder will be required to attend progress monitoring interviews quarterly/annually.
  • The bursary is subject to a service-binding contract, which may include vacation work at IDZ during the June/July or December/January holidays.

Who Can Apply:

  • South African citizens or naturalized South African citizens.
  • Bona fide Eastern Cape residents (from townships and villages).
  • Grade 12 learners or those who have completed Grade 12 with a National Senior Certificate (NSC).
  • Disabled applicants and individuals from historically disadvantaged communities in rural and poor areas.

  2. Attach all required documents (check the checklist in the application form). Do not send original documents as they will not be returned.
