Scholarship Description:

The Academy of International Affairs NRW is offering fellowships for research topics in international politics, including the Geopolitics of Outer Space. The fellowships are open to senior and young researchers from all academic disciplines who hold a doctoral degree, as well as practitioners from various fields such as diplomatic services, politics, media, business, and civil society. The fellowships will last for three to ten months at the AIA NRW in Bonn. Interested candidates can apply for the fellowships for the period of April 2024 to March 2025, and the deadline for submitting applications is July 1, 2023.

The Academy of International Affairs (AIA NRW) has a mission to actively participate in shaping the transformations of global changes and challenges, and to secure the future for generations to come. To achieve this, the AIA NRW invites exceptional individuals from research, politics, and civil society to come together and explore new paths and solutions for the future. The core of the AIA NRW is an international and interdisciplinary fellowship program, which offers exceptional candidates the opportunity to spend several months in Bonn, Germany. The AIA NRW is an independent and non-partisan fellowship institute, fully funded by the Federal State of North-Rhine Westphalia. It provides an ideal environment for study and exchange, and is located in Bonn, a city that hosts many important actors in academia, media, the United Nations, and civil society. The AIA NRW aims to be a partner and host to these actors.

Scholarship Benefits:

The Academy makes an individual agreement with each of the Fellows that takes into account the financial situation at their home institution. The stay in Bonn is not meant to lead to any financial disadvantage for the Fellows. Paying for a substitute to fulfil one’s duties or providing a monthly stipend are equally valid options. The Academy also bears the costs of travel to and from Bonn and of accommodation while in residence.

The Fellowship Programme of the Academy is aimed at outstanding and highly qualified scholars and scientists of all nationalities

Eligibility Criteria:

Academy of international affairs NRW welcomes applicants from all disciplines who are researching in the Academy’s thematic area. Apart from political science, legal studies, economics, history, sociology and philosophy applications from science and technology studies are welcome as well once they address relevant issues of social dynamics. It is addressed primarily to established university faculty, but also to younger scholars and scientists (holding at least a doctorate). Eligible for short-term fellowships are experts with professional experience in the fields of politics, diplomacy, business, NGOs and the media. The focus here is on the exchange between research and practice and the practical application of scientific findings.

Application Procedure:

The Fellows are selected by an international Academic Board. To apply, as well as a sketch of the research project to be pursued at the Academy, submission of publications, CV and a list of publications is required.
