ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – IIE VARSITY COLLEGE & THE WITNESS
Established over 25 years ago, The IIE’s Varsity College is a leading institution in private tertiary education in South Africa. As part of The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), Varsity College focuses on providing a personalized educational journey that nurtures each student’s unique abilities. The institution emphasizes critical and creative thinking, preparing students to excel in their own paths.
The Witness, a longstanding daily newspaper based in Pietermaritzburg, has been serving the communities of Pietermaritzburg, Durban, and the inland areas of KwaZulu-Natal since 1846. As South Africa’s oldest continuously published newspaper, it has maintained a vital role in delivering news and information to its readers for over 175 years.
ABOUT THE IIE VARSITY COLLEGE & THE WITNESS BURSARY PROGRAMME
IIE’s Varsity College and The Witness, is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2025 academic year.
Partial bursaries will be awarded for studies at IIE Varsity College, Pietermaritzburg campus, for any 3 or 4 year degree programme.

MORE ABOUT THE IIE VARSITY COLLEGE & THE WITNESS BURSARY PROGRAMME
1 winner will be selected, to receive the 50% bursary award, which will cover tuition fees only.
The bursary covers the full duration of the selected programme, provided the recipient maintains acceptable academic performance according to The IIE’s Varsity College guidelines. It can be renewed annually, but only for the minimum prescribed time frame outlined in the qualification fact sheet.
The bursary is non-transferable and must be used within the year it is awarded, or it will be forfeited. Bursary funds will be credited to the student’s fee account after full registration and cannot be used as a substitute for the deposit or initial instalment. The bursary is strictly for tuition fees and cannot be converted to cash.
SELECTION FOR THE IIE VARSITY COLLEGE & THE WITNESS BURSARY
A group of judges from The Witness and The IIE’s Varsity College will evaluate submissions based on these factors: the essay’s strength and clarity, the alignment between the applicant’s objectives and the programmes offered by The IIE’s Varsity College, and a current 12-month subscription to The Witness.
The selected winner will be contacted via phone and email. Their name, along with portions of their essay (with personal details removed), may be featured in The Witness and utilized for promotional campaigns.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE IIE VARSITY COLLEGE & THE WITNESS BURSARY
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must be a South African citizen or a permanent resident in South Africa
- You must NOT be an employees of The Witness, IIE’s Varsity College or their immediate families or advertising agencies associated with this competition
- You must read and agree to the bursary T&C’s
