ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – AIDC-EC AUTOMOTIVE & NMU
The AIDC-EC Chair of Automotive Engineering at Nelson Mandela University is dedicated to advancing research and innovation in the automotive and manufacturing sectors, with a focus on multidisciplinary projects. The Chair leads efforts in areas such as advanced automotive technologies and manufacturing production processes. Responsibilities include managing research initiatives, collaborating with industry on new product development, and driving commercialization and knowledge creation. A key objective is to embed engineering, manufacturing, and e-mobility education at all higher education levels in the Eastern Cape. The role also fosters ongoing partnerships with external academic and industrial stakeholders, including international student and staff exchange programs, to facilitate knowledge transfer in Automotive Engineering.
ABOUT THE AIDC-EC AUTOMOTIVE NMU BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
The AIDC-EC Automotive Engineering Chair is invting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2025 academic year.
Masters studies:
- Mechatronics Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Operations Management
Doctorate/PhD studies:
- Mechatronics Engineering
The Chair aims to establish Engineering Research and Innovation Platforms to manage and align the requirements of Industry to the offerings of Nelson Mandela University these can be grouped as follows:
Product Design and Development Platforms
End to End process design for parts and systems, Original Equipment Manufacturer processes, Product Life Cycle Management and Systems Thinking.
Software Systems Platforms
Fully connected car, Communications and power systems, over the air connectivity.
Software defined vehicles, data management systems, logistics systems and entertainment systems.
Manufacturing and Digital Industries Platforms
Digital design and servitisation of products and manufacturing environments. Manufacturing with engineered materials e.g. new metal alloys or composites. Manufacturing of parts and assemblies e.g. Support of OEM Product Development (localization). Smart Factory Platforms; Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies, Advanced Robotics, Human enhancement systems, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and Additive Manufacturing. Cyber Physical Systems. Design of Future Production Systems with Digitalisation, Machine learning, human machine collaboration.

MORE ABOUT THE AIDC-EC AUTOMOTIVE NMU BURSARY PROGRAMME
- Masters: R150 000 per annum, for 1 year
- Doctorate: R150 000 per annum, for 2 years (total R300 000)
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AIDC-EC AUTOMOTIVE NMU BURSARY
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying for this bursary (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must be a South African citizen
- Masters degree applicants: you must have completed an NQF level 8 qualification
- Doctorate/PhD degree applicants: you must have completed an NQF level 9 qualification
- You must be eligible to register at Nelson Mandela University, within one of the qualifications listed above (read the NMU admission requirements here)
- Preference will be given to automotive engineering related project titles

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your email application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- ID document (certified copy)
- Academic Record
- All qualifications completed (certified copy – not less than 3 months)
- Proof of registration obtained from Student Records
- Proposed title of treatise/dissertation
- Reference letter from prospective study leader(s)/supervisor(s)
Note: candidates awaiting graduation, must attach an institutional letter stating that the requirements for the qualification have been fulfilled. Candidates awaiting the outcome of their dissertation/thesis examination must attach a letter from their current institution confirming that their dissertation/thesis is under examination.
