Applications Open for Youth Education Assistant Posts in South African Schools

The Department of Basic Education has officially opened applications for the latest phase of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI), aimed at reducing youth unemployment by placing eligible candidates as Education Assistants (EAs) and General School Assistants (GSAs) in public schools across South Africa.

According to the announcement, applications are open from 22 April to 09 May 2025 (23:59), and interviews will be conducted from 19 to 31 May 2025. Successful applicants will commence work on 02 June 2025.

Education Assistant Roles (Matric Required)

Education Assistants will support teachers in classrooms and include roles such as:

  • Curriculum Assistants
  • Reading Champions
  • ICT Integration (e-Cadres)
  • Care and Support Assistants
  • Laboratory and Workshop Assistants

Applicants must have at least a matric qualification to qualify for EA positions.

General School Assistant Roles (Matric Not Required)

For those without matric, the General School Assistant roles focus on:

  • Handyman or maintenance duties
  • Sports, arts, and cultural enrichment activities

Stipend and Eligibility

Each participant will earn a monthly stipend of R4,000, minus UIF contributions and a R30 data allowance. The programme is open to both new and previous participants from phases I to IV, provided they meet the current requirements.

This initiative forms part of the Presidential Employment Stimulus and is delivered in partnership with the Department of Employment and Labour, UIF, and SA Youth.
