Anneke Lamont (neé Van Heerden) played 12 Preludes and Fugues from the “48” by J.S.Bach when she was twelve years old as a student of Josias van der Merwe. She holds a B.Mus from UCT under Lamar Crowson and the degrees B Mus(Hons) and M Mus (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria where Joseph Stanford was her teacher. She received a PhD in 2006 from the University of the Free State with Albie van Schalkwyk and Stephanus Muller as promotors.
As winner of the UNISA Overseas Scholarship as well as a SAMRO bursary in 1986 she furthered her studies in Germany with Arie Vardi in Hannover.There she gave recitals of the Goldberg Variations by Bach as well as the Diabelli Variations by Beethoven. She has performed with some of South Africa’s top musicians and made a number of compact disk recordings. She was the accompanist for cellists Alexander Ivashkin and Gary Hoffman on their concert tours of South Africa. She won with cellist Raphael Kwiatkowski the prize for the best rendering of a classical sonata and the prescribed South African composition in the 2002 Unisa International String competition and accompanied Anna Kasyan, the runner-up of the 2006 Unisa International Singing Competition.She was also the duo partner with the Italian flautist Francesca Canali for her tour of Southern Africa in 2012.
Anneke is an accredited teacher for Unisa and an examiner for the Unisa Music Examinations. She was on the screening panel for the 2008 UNISA International Piano Competitions.
She was Director of Music at Oakhill School in Knysna from 2015-2018.
In 2017 she organized two “Voices for Hospice” concerts after the devastating fires in Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. Richard Cock was the conductor and some of South Africa’s top musicians were invited to participate in the event and to perform with Anneke and a mass choir comprising members from Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Sedgefield, Wilderness and George. These two concerts raised R147 k for the Plett Hospice and the Knysna Sedgefield Hospice and similar concerts are now held every two years in the Southern Cape region.
Anneke also had the opportunity to tour with Palissander, the premier South African choir in 2018 to Estonia and Russia and then had the privilege to meet composer Arvo Pärt. She is doing research on his work and his influence on Christian Spirituality.
She was appointed as Head of Piano at the Odeion School for Music at the UFS in July 2018. Anneke is a member of “Die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns.”
