The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) is warning South Africans about a raft of fake adverts on short-form video platform TikTok.
Last week the RTMC said it was aware of a fake advertisement for Traffic Officer Learnerships circulating on TikTok. The company says that it did not publish the advert and it is entirely fake.
“The RTMC condemns, in the strongest possible terms, individuals who prey on the public by spreading false information and exploiting job seekers in an attempt to solicit bribes or other personal gains. These unethical and criminal activities not only tarnish the image of genuine organisations but also cause financial and emotional harm to innocent members of our society,” the corporation said in a statement.
A simple search of TikTok yields several results for Traffic Officer Learnerships, none of which appear to be legit.
South African job seekers are advised to visit the official RTMC website as well as reputable publications for opportunities at the corporation. At present the RTMC is only advertising four positions but these were listed in September so it’s unclear if the positions are still vacant.
Members of the public who spot adverts that appear suspicious are urged to report them to the RTMC via the website, email (on info[at]rtmc[dot]co[dot]za) or by calling 0861 400 800. The corporation notes that adverts demanding payment in exchange for employment are most assuredly fake and should be reported. No government entity will ever ask for payment in exchange for employment and any private company demanding that should be looked at with suspicion.
Scammers love advertising their scams on social media as they are more likely to find victims, especially when the scam revolves around jobs in a country where unemployment is a major problem. Aside from reporting the scam to RTMC, it’s a good idea to report the post on the platform you found it to help prevent others from falling prey to the scam.
In other RTMC related news, the corporation’s Midrand office will be closed today, 15th January, for a compulsory one-day workshop. A similar workshop will be hosted at the Centurion Gate DLTC on 23rd January and that office will be closed as a result.
“The corporation apologises for any inconvenience caused by these temporary closures. All appointments on the affected days will be rescheduled,” the RTMC said.
