Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer (Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture: Department of Visual Art)
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is looking for an accomplished academic and visual artist to join its vibrant Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA). This is a unique opportunity to lead, innovate, and inspire the next generation of artists and researchers within the Department of Visual Art. The appointment will be made at the Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, or Lecturer level, depending on your qualifications and experience.

Your Role and Responsibilities
As a key member of the Visual Art Department, you will report to the Head of Department and play a vital role in shaping our academic programs. Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading as a Module Leader for Drawing courses.
- Contributing expertise in at least one other undergraduate area: Painting, Sculpture, New Media/Photography/Videography, and/or History of Art.
- Providing academic leadership and fostering an innovative, inclusive learning environment.
- Delivering high-quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- Mentoring and supervising students, tutors, and postgraduate candidates.
- Conducting research and/or creative practice that leads to DHET-accredited outputs.
- Building external networks and partnerships to enhance student engagement and industry relevance.
- Supporting curriculum development, course coordination, and academic administration.
- Contributing actively to FADA and UJ’s strategic plans, including teaching, learning, research, internationalisation, and community engagement.
Who We Are Looking For (Minimum Requirements)
Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer
- A Doctorate in Visual Art or a related discipline.
- At least five (5) to ten (10) years of teaching experience in Visual Art.
- A strong record of accredited research output (in journals, books, or book chapters).
- Proven leadership experience in an academic setting suitable for the appointment level.
Essential Skills and Attributes
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proven leadership and organisational ability, coupled with emotional intelligence, integrity, and professionalism.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Demonstrated collegiality and capacity to collaborate with diverse stakeholders (staff, students, community partners).
- Proven ability in programme coordination and management.
- Relevant digital literacy, including experience with learning management systems.
Recommendations (Bonus Points)
- An NRF rating or the ability to achieve one.
- Demonstrated leadership and vision for advancing Visual Art’s role in social impact, community engagement, 4IR (Fourth Industrial Revolution) applications, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
- Experience with Global South research and engagement with academics or institutions in the Global South.
