Bursary Description

Scholarship Description:

The Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship initiative was established by the Hungarian Government with the goal of internationalizing Hungarian higher education. It aims to attract outstanding students worldwide to pursue their education in Hungary, fostering personal and professional connections to the country while receiving high-quality instruction in the heart of Europe.

Upon completing their studies, scholarship recipients return to their home nations equipped with valuable skills and knowledge. This enables them to foster social, political, and economic ties, thereby enhancing cooperation between Hungary and their home countries. Launched in 2013, the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme provides foreign students the opportunity to undertake higher education studies in Hungary.

Managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and coordinated by the Tempus Public Foundation, the program operates through educational agreements between Hungary and sending countries/territories. Currently active on five continents with over 80 Sending Partners, the program’s geographical reach continues to expand.

The scholarship program offers full-degree and partial study options within the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree framework, mainly conducted in English. Additionally, foreign language programs are available through the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme. Students can pursue a year-long Hungarian language preparatory training course before beginning higher education studies in Hungarian.

Scholarship recipients are encouraged to focus on their academic progress while in Hungary, as their tuition fees, accommodation, and living costs are covered. Possessing a European degree upon graduation opens up diverse opportunities in the global job market.

Since its inception in 2013, the number of Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship holders has grown substantially, leading to an increase in self-paying international students in Hungarian universities. Between 2013 and 2019, the proportion of international students in Hungarian higher education institutions has doubled, with Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship recipients among them quadrupling. Consequently, the count of foreign language study programs taught in Hungarian universities has tripled since 2015.

Both applicants and awardees of the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship have been consistently rising, along with the available scholarship slots. In 2022, the program received more than 500,000 applications and granted nearly 4,900 scholarships. This demonstrates that since its inception, the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship has established itself as a program of exceptional merit.

Scholarship Benefits:

Education provided through the scholarship program offers several financial benefits to recipients:

  1. Tuition-Free Education: Scholarship holders are exempt from paying tuition fees for their studies.

  2. Monthly Stipend: Depending on the level of study, scholarship holders receive a monthly stipend to cover living expenses in Hungary. The stipend amounts to HUF 43,700 (approximately EUR 2,103) per month for non-degree, bachelor’s, master’s, and one-tier master’s level students. This stipend is provided for 12 months a year until the completion of their studies.

  3. Accommodation Contribution: Scholarship recipients are either provided with a free dormitory place or receive a monthly accommodation contribution of HUF 40,000. However, it’s important to note that if a student chooses not to live in the dormitory, the HUF 40,000/month is meant to assist with rental costs. In larger cities, especially the capital city, this contribution may not cover the entire rental expense.

  4. Medical Insurance: Scholarship holders are covered by health care services as per the relevant Hungarian legislation (Act LXXX of 1997) through the national health insurance card. Additionally, they receive supplementary medical insurance that covers up to HUF 65,000 (approximately EUR 153) per year per person.

It’s crucial to understand that these provisions are designed to assist with the living expenses of the scholarship holders. While they provide significant support, they might not cover all the costs of living in Hungary. Students are advised to assess the expected living expenses in both Hungary and the specific city they plan to reside in before applying for the scholarship. The “Cost of Living Calculator” provided by the scholarship program can be helpful for this purpose. It’s important for applicants to be aware that they might need to supplement these provisions with their own financial resources to adequately cover their living expenses during their time in Hungary.
