Scholarship Description:
Every year, the Charles Wallace Pakistan Trust grants a single fellowship to a Pakistani scholar whose research and professional trajectory would significantly gain from a three-month tenure at SOAS. This placement, hosted within the SOAS South Asia Institute, is scheduled to occur from January to May 2024. The intention behind this fellowship is to provide an enriching opportunity for the chosen scholar to enhance their academic pursuits and career prospects.
The primary objectives of the three-month visiting fellowship encompass several key aspects:
- Actively enhancing the research atmosphere of the Institute.
- Offering members and research students of the SSAI (South Asia Institute) the valuable prospect of collaborating with eminent scholars from external institutions.
- Establishing and fostering connections with academic establishments in Pakistan.
- Facilitating collaborative research endeavors between Pakistani academics and SSAI colleagues.
Regarding the contributions expected from the visiting fellows:
- Participating in the Institute’s seminar series by delivering a talk.
- Engaging in the broader intellectual environment of the institution, including active involvement in seminars.
- Potential engagement in diverse Institute activities:
- Giving a presentation within a Departmental seminar series or a conference.
- Collaborating on research projects with Institute members.
- Providing an article for the Institute’s working papers series.
- Formulating research proposals to seek external funding awards through the Institute.
- Expanding the SSAI’s network of affiliations, spanning academia, practitioners, policy-makers, and the media.
Degree Level:
SOAS Charles Wallace Pakistan Fellowship, UK. (For Pakistani Students) is available to undertake Fellowship level programs at SOAS.

Scholarship Benefits:
Successful candidate will receive a contribution of £900 towards visa fees and fares, and a monthly stipend of £1500. The successful candidate will be obliged to find his/her own accommodation in London
Eligible Nationalities:
Pakistani Students are eiligible to apply for this scholarship.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must be Pakistani nationals and be residing in Pakistan at the time the application is submitted.
- Applicants must have completed a PhD and must be working in the fields of ‘Pakistan Studies’ (Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) which are supported at SOAS.
- Applications would be particularly welcomed from applicants whose research focuses on modern and contemporary Pakistan in one of the SSAI’s thematic areas: Resources Under Pressure; Citizenship, Rights and Inequality; The Politics of Culture and Religion; Interactions and Interventions in the Arts; Lineages of Knowledge and Power.
- Applicants may not hold the Fellowship for the purpose of, or in conjunction with, enrolment in any Higher Educational Institution in the United Kingdom (including SOAS).
- Applicants must be in the early to middle stage of their academic careers.
- Candidates must demonstrate sufficient English language ability, both written and spoken, to participate in discussions and use resource materials.
- Applicants must state if they are in receipt of any other grant, or are awaiting results of other applications. Failure to do so may result in the fellowship being withdrawn.

- Two letters of recommendation.
