The University of Johannesburg (UJ) invites applications for a Professor or Associate Professor position within the Department of Quality and Operations Management. About the Faculty and Department

The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment is a dynamic community dedicated to enhancing student learning, research, and the academic, social, and economic impact of its programmes.

The Department of Quality and Operations Management has a team of 15 lecturers serving over 1500 students across three programmes: Operations Management, Management Services, and Quality. These programmes cover areas from quality and process strategy to human resources and supply chain management, preparing students for careers in production supervision, factory management, product development, quality assurance, and more.

Key Responsibilities

As a Professor/Associate Professor, your duties will include:

  • Lecturing, coordinating, and assessing large undergraduate and postgraduate modules.
  • Developing and managing study materials for assigned modules.
  • Successfully supervising postgraduate students and their research projects.
  • Conducting research in areas aligning with departmental interests and publishing in accredited, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Contributing to departmental outreach and community engagement initiatives.
  • Securing internal and external research funding.
  • Participating in all departmental academic and administrative activities, including invigilation, meetings, and leadership roles.
  • Building and maintaining external professional networks and international collaborations.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • An appropriate Doctoral degree (NQF level 10) in Operations Management, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least five (5) years of relevant teaching, learning, research, or work experience, with a strong focus on Quality Management, Operations Management, and Information Technology.
  • A proven record of research output from research units within the last five (5) years.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising and graduating Master’s and Doctoral students.
  • Evidence of leadership contributions within departmental, school, faculty, and university communities.

Required Competencies and Attributes

We are looking for candidates with:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with high proficiency in English.
  • Strong planning and organisational abilities.
  • Well-developed quantitative and/or qualitative methodology skills.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a departmental and faculty team.
  • Flexibility and strong team-oriented skills.
  • Enthusiasm and passion for teaching, research, and community engagement.
  • The ability to teach across multidisciplinary fields.
  • Sound problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Advantageous Skills and Experience

The following will be considered an advantage:

  • Previous teaching and learning experience in a Higher Education Institution.
  • A proven track record of postgraduate research supervision and consistent journal publications with an h-index greater than 4.
  • NRF rating, or having applied for/willingness to apply for an NRF rating.
  • Proven engagement with the scholarship of teaching and learning, including innovative teaching and research techniques incorporating technology.
  • Membership of professional associations/bodies and a proven record of mentoring junior staff members.
  • Research specialisation that aligns well with the department’s existing interests.
  • Strong evidence of research outputs and postgraduate supervision at Master’s and Doctoral levels.
