Assistant Lecturer

About the College of Accounting
The College of Accounting is one of the largest departments within UCT’s esteemed Faculty of Commerce. We are dedicated to fostering excellence in accounting education and research, providing a vibrant academic environment for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Your Role as Assistant Lecturer (Accounting)
This is a 3-year part-time contract position, requiring approximately 20 hours per week. It is ideally suited for a researcher with a master’s degree and a strong passion for supporting postgraduate teaching, research, and scholarship. Reporting to the Head of Department, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing our research environment and programme quality.
Your primary responsibilities will include providing academic and research support to postgraduate students enrolled in our MCom (specialising in Financial Reporting, Analysis and Governance – FRAG) and PhD programmes. You will also offer essential research support to academic staff within the College. We are looking to make an appointment as soon as possible.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide ongoing academic and methodological support to MCom FRAG and PhD students through one-on-one and group consultations.
- Mark and provide constructive feedback on literature reviews, research proposals, and dissertations.
- Assist with academic administration and logistics for postgraduate programmes.
- Support academic staff with tasks such as transcriptions, editing, reference checks, research seminars, and grant applications.
- Collaborate on academic publications when invited.
- Manage various research tasks and coordinate multiple projects to meet deadlines.
- Undertake other research-related duties as assigned by the Head of Department.
Requirements for the Position
- A Master’s (NQF 9) degree with a research component comprising at least 50% of the degree.
- At least two (2) years of relevant post-Master’s research experience.
- Demonstrated experience in supporting postgraduate students with research design, methodology, and academic writing.
- Ability to work independently within broad research parameters and meet medium-term deliverables.
Advantageous Skills and Experience
- A Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Management, or a closely related field.
- Proven experience in conducting qualitative research, including semi-structured or unstructured interviews.
- Experience in quantitative research and data analysis.
- Strong technical editing and referencing skills for academic writing.
- Research publications in reputable journals.
Salary & Benefits
The annual remuneration package for 2025, including benefits, is R415,576.
