Prospect Researcher

Are you a skilled researcher with a passion for making a difference? The University of Cape Town (UCT) is looking for a dedicated Prospect Researcher to join its dynamic Development and Alumni Department (DAD). This is a fantastic opportunity to support vital fundraising and engagement efforts by identifying and researching potential donors.

About the Role

As a Prospect Researcher, you will play a crucial role in UCT’s fundraising initiatives. You’ll be responsible for conducting high-quality research on individuals, foundations, and corporations that have the potential to support the university’s mission. Your work will directly contribute to securing resources that advance UCT’s academic excellence and impact.

This is a permanent, full-time position based in our Cape Town office. You will be expected to report to the office daily.

Key Responsibilities

  • Proactively identify and assess potential donors, evaluating their wealth, philanthropic interests, and alignment with UCT’s strategic priorities.
  • Prepare detailed biographies and research briefs for university executives and fundraisers for meetings and events.
  • Collaborate closely with fundraisers and the Prospect Development Manager on managing donor portfolios.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records within CRM systems and contribute to improving data quality.
  • Verify donor prospects to ensure data integrity and strategic outreach.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • An NQF Level 6 qualification with at least 3 years of relevant desk research experience, OR an NQF Level 5 qualification with 5 years of relevant desk research experience. Experience in fundraising, nonprofit, academic, or corporate sectors is ideal.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to gather, interpret, and synthesize complex information.
  • Excellent written communication skills and a keen eye for detail.
  • Proven experience using CRM systems, databases, and various research tools.
  • The ability to handle highly confidential information with utmost discretion.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities and consistently meet deadlines.
  • To be resourceful and able to work independently, while also thriving in a team-oriented environment and contributing to an integrated fundraising program.

Advantageous Skills

The following skills and experiences would be beneficial:

  • Experience in philanthropic or donor research specifically.
  • Previous experience within the Higher Education sector.
  • Familiarity with fundraising strategy or major gift programs.
  • The ability to effectively engage and communicate with diverse stakeholders at all levels.

Salary & Work Environment

The annual cost of employment for 2025, including benefits, ranges from R513,345 to R603,933. This translates to an approximate monthly salary range of R42,779 to R50,328. This is an in-office position located in Cape Town.
