Are you an experienced and dynamic administrative leader looking for a challenging role in higher education? The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is seeking a dedicated Faculty Manager for its vibrant Faculty of Law. This is a crucial full-time position responsible for overseeing and managing academic administrative services, working closely with the Faculty’s leadership to advance social justice and excellence in legal education.

The Faculty of Law is a thriving environment comprising four academic departments, research institutes, and centres, all focused on critical scholarship and advancing social justice through legal education.

Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas

As the Faculty Manager, you will be a vital part of the Faculty’s leadership team, providing strategic support and guidance on policy formulation. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and implementing a vision and mission for the Faculty’s administrative functions.
  • Contributing strategically to policy development and the Faculty Operational Plan.
  • Establishing and managing an annual administrative operational plan.
  • Overseeing staff management, including the University’s Personal Development Management System (PDS) and Integrated Talent Management Framework (ITMF).
  • Providing advice and liaison services to academics, administrative staff, students, applicants, and committees.
  • Ensuring compliance with central administrative systems and standards.
  • Managing governance and committee administration.
  • Monitoring, evaluating, reporting, and planning based on data analysis.
  • Administering Faculty finances and preparing the annual Faculty budget.
  • Integrating central HR practices with the Faculty’s specific needs.
  • Maintaining and improving facilities, equipment, building standards, and hygiene.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this influential role, you should have:

  • An NQF Level 9 qualification (Master’s degree).
  • At least 5 years of senior-level academic administration experience in a higher education setting.
  • 5 years of proven staff management experience, preferably in higher education.
  • Solid working knowledge of Higher Education legislation, regulations, and policies.
  • Experience in servicing high-level committees.
  • Proven ability to coordinate diverse, complex, and high-level administrative functions related to the academic cycle in a university.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • High level of computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office packages.

Advantageous Skills & Key Competencies

While not mandatory, having fluency in a South African indigenous language would be a significant advantage. We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

  • A robust client focus with impeccable interpersonal skills, assertiveness, and the ability to build and maintain strong relationships internally and externally.
