About the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies

The Department of Women’s and Gender Studies within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities is a prominent teaching and research hub at UWC. It offers a variety of undergraduate courses, supervises postgraduate students, leads research projects with national and international partners, and actively engages in seminars, public humanities events, and collaborations with arts, culture, and social justice sectors.

The Role: Departmental Administrative Officer

The Department is seeking an experienced Departmental Administrator to provide essential support to staff and manage all departmental administrative procedures. This role ensures that departmental operations are aligned with and compliant with central university administrative systems and processes.

Reporting directly to the Chairperson of the department, your key responsibilities will include:

Key Performance Areas

  • Undergraduate and Postgraduate academic administration
  • Managing reception duties and handling enquiries
  • Administering student marks
  • Supporting committee and meeting administration
  • Performing financial administration tasks
  • Assisting with Human Resources administration
  • Supporting marketing and recruitment initiatives
  • Organising and managing events
  • Preparing reports
  • Handling general administrative duties

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this vital role, you should meet one of the following criteria:

  • A Grade 12 certificate combined with a relevant three-year post-matric qualification; OR
  • A Matric certificate plus 3 to 5 years of relevant administrative experience.

Added Advantages

Candidates with the following qualifications or experience will have an advantage:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Administrative experience within a Higher Education environment.
  • Familiarity with university systems such as SASI and MAS.
  • Proficiency in computer software packages including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (MS Office Suites).
