About the nGAP Programme

The nGAP is a nationally funded initiative by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) designed to recruit and develop a new cohort of young academics. This transformative programme prioritises designated candidates (South African citizens) under 40 years old. As an nGAP appointee, you will benefit from extensive teaching and research development opportunities and will be required to register for your PhD or postdoctoral studies if you don’t already hold one.

Role Overview

The Department of Emergency Medical Care is seeking an exceptionally motivated and qualified individual to join its permanent staff. You will contribute significantly to the department’s teaching and research focus, shaping the next generation of emergency medical professionals in South Africa.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate engaging teaching, learning, and assessment activities for undergraduate Emergency Medical Care students.
  • Participate in and facilitate clinical learning, Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), simulated learning events, and clinical placements, including mentoring students.
  • Develop and refine course materials to ensure high-quality education.
  • Organize and participate in physical fitness and swimming training, conducting related assessments where necessary.
  • Annually publish peer-reviewed papers in accredited scholarly journals and present at national and international conferences.
  • Actively conduct research that contributes to the field of Emergency Medical Care.
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students in their academic journeys.
  • Actively participate in all Departmental academic and administrative duties, such as audit preparations and official meetings.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Master’s degree (NQF-9) in Emergency Medical Care or an appropriate professional qualification (NQF-9) in Emergency Medical Care, with a minimum mark of 70%. If you do not have a PhD, you must commit to registering for one upon commencement of duties.
  • Two years of active registration with the HPCSA as an Emergency Care Practitioner (and currently registered).
  • Valid Code B driver’s license.
  • Ability to successfully pass departmental physical fitness and swimming assessments.

  • Excellent planning and organizational abilities.
  • Enthusiastic, tenacious, and genuinely passionate about clinical work and teaching.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience (Recommendations)

  • A Doctoral degree (NQF-10) in Emergency Medical Care, having obtained a minimum of 70% in your Master’s degree.
  • One to two years of working experience in teaching and learning environments.
  • Knowledge of faculty and academic policies, rules, and regulations.
  • A proven track record of postgraduate research supervision and peer-reviewed publications in Emergency Medical Care.
  • Experience with online and/or remote learning platforms.
