  • Department of Education’s Bursary Advocacy Campaign: The Eastern Cape Department of Education is actively promoting bursary opportunities for 2025, including visits to schools to inform learners and families about available financial aid programs.
  • Focus on Key Bursary Programs: The campaign highlights three main bursaries—Funza Lushaka, Matthew Goniwe, and Military Veterans—aimed at supporting higher education, especially in shortage fields like teaching.
  • Application Timeline Awareness: Learners are being informed about important application dates, with Funza Lushaka opening on October 1, 2025, and the Matthew Goniwe and Military Veterans bursaries opening in early November 2025.

The Eastern Cape Department of Education has ramped up its drive to inform students and families about available bursary options for the 2025 academic year. As part of its ongoing bursary advocacy campaign, the department recently visited Chief Blokleni Senior Secondary School in Libode, located in the OR Tambo District.

The outreach focused on three key bursary programs—Funza Lushaka, Matthew Goniwe, and the Military Veterans bursary—all aimed at supporting learners in their pursuit of higher education, particularly in fields facing shortages like teaching.

The event gave learners direct access to information about application timelines and eligibility, helping them plan ahead as they approach the end of the school year.

Key application dates to remember:

Funza Lushaka Bursary: Opens 1 October 2025

Matthew Goniwe and Military Veterans Bursaries: Open during the first week of November 2025

These bursaries offer full or partial financial support for studies at accredited institutions and are targeted at young South Africans who meet specific criteria.

The campaign forms part of the department’s broader goal to expand access to education and unlock potential in communities across the province.

Learners, parents, and school officials were encouraged to stay informed and take full advantage of the support available.
