Applications are now open for the 2025 Sasol South African Mainstream Bursary Programme for full-time studies in engineering and science. Apply below:

Tell Me About The Sasol Foundation Mainstream Bursary Program:

The Sasol Bursary programme comprises of a comprehensive package that includes both financial as well as developmental support throughout the study period. Bursaries are awarded for full-time university studies in engineering and science. Upon successful completion of the study period, students may be employed within the Sasol Group through our Graduate Development Programmes.  Note must be taken that Sasol Mainstream bursaries have a workback and/or payback obligation.  Please note that this bursary programme does not accept Technical Maths/Maths literacy.

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Chemistry (Studies to Hons. level will be required)
  • Civil Engineering
  • Data Science – Computer Science
  • Data Science – Mathematics
  • Data Science – Operations Research
  • Data Science – Statistics
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronic Engineering
  • Geology  (Studies to Hons. level will be required)
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Metallurgy (Studies to Hons. level will be required)
  • Mining Engineering

Note: Undergraduate Studies (B.Eng. / B.Sc..) – Please note that this bursary program does not accept Technical Maths/Maths literacy.

Undergraduate Studies (B.Eng. Tech.) – University of Technology:

Postgraduate Studies (M.Sc. / M.Eng. / PhD):
Postgraduate bursaries are granted in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, especially for research that supports Sasol and South Africa’s energy and circular economy transition. Core disciplines include:

  • Chemical Engineering – Fluid Dynamics, Mathematical & Statistical Modelling, Process Modelling, Reactor Technology, Separation Technology, Thermodynamics
  • Chemistry – Advanced Analytical Chemistry (Vibrational Spectroscopy, Gas Chromatography), Catalysis or Polymer Science, Environmental Science (Water, Waste, Air – especially dispersion modelling)
  • Cyber Security
  • Data Science – Applied Mathematics, Statistics

Who can Apply for the Sasol Foundation Mainstream Bursary Program?

The eligibility criteria include:

  • South African citizens only
  • Must be studying full-time at a recognised and approved standard South African university (not distance learning, e.g. UNISA)
  • Only one application per student is allowed
  • Must apply using current academic year results (e.g. matriculants use Grade 11 results)
  • Students applying must not be using Technical Maths or Maths Literacy

How are Applicants Selected?

  • Selection is based on Sasol’s internal needs and strict selection criteria
  • Academic competitiveness and alignment with Sasol’s business needs play a critical role
  • Bursaries are conditionally awarded based on prior academic performance and will only be activated if the following year’s results are approximately equivalent
  • Incorrect or misleading information at any stage will render the application void

  • Academic results from the previous year (e.g., Grade 11 results for current matriculants)
  • All necessary supporting documentation as required in the online application
  • Incomplete or incorrect information will result in disqualification
