Bursary Description
The Southeast College has given out some bursary awards to students, giving them some help with finances during the school year.
Some recent award presentations took place in Weyburn on February 10, Estevan on February 11, and Whitewood on February 12.
Vice President of Communication and Strategic Enrollment Sheena Onrait says they’re changing up how awards are given out to better help students.
“We made a bit of a change with our scholarship and bursary awards this year. So we decided to kind of separate the two. Previously, we’ve awarded everything in our graduation ceremony in June. However, when we did an analysis of our bursary and awards program this past year, we decided it would be more advantageous for our students to be able to award those financial needs bursaries while the students were still actually students at Southeast College. We decided that kind of midpoint of the program made the most logical sense and it just happened to align with Student Appreciation Week. So it turned out really great.
Bursaries, which are based on financial need, are put forward by a number of different companies and organizations around Estevan.
“Here in Estevan, we always have a really great award ceremony here. So our bursary donors are a lot of community organizations. So thankfully we have the support of the City of Estevan and Conquest Equipment, Greenwood Sustainable Innovation and Steel Reef, they come through with a really great bursary program for us every single year. So those are just some of the awards we gave away this year.”
Students will be able to apply for scholarships that would come out at the end of the year as normal.
“We’re just working on revising our scholarship application form. So our goal is to have that out early March for our students and have them be able to have about two to three weeks to complete and then we go to work on our side, adjudicating those scholarships and then we’ll be awarding them in conjunction with our graduation ceremonies. We have graduation ceremonies planned in Estevan, Weyburn and Whitewood this year, and they will be spread throughout the first week of June.”
Onrait says she’s grateful for all of the support that comes from the community.
“If there’s anyone out there who wants to learn more about our scholarship or bursary award program for our students, any companies or community organizations, they can always get ahold of me by calling us through the Estevan campus or by calling our toll-free information line as well. Of course, it’s our 50th anniversary this year, so we’ve go a couple of new initiatives for scholarships and bursaries for our students throughout the year.”
