ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – FASKEN
Fasken is an international business law and litigation organisation, with branches in China, Canada, the UK and South Africa. The firm works alongside clients from all corners of the world, providing their expertise on legal issues. Clients are served in French, English and all of South Africa’s 11 official languages.
Fasken has been operating in Africa for more than 130 years. The companies South Africa founding partner began practicing as an Attorney in 1879 in Grahamstown. Today, the Johannesburg Fasken team are well versed in all of the growth and established industries in Africa, including healthcare, finance, mining, infrastructure, energy and technology.
In October 2012, Fasken successfully merged with Bell Dewar, a Johannesburg-based law firm and is now one of the biggest law firms on the African continent.
ABOUT THE FASKEN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
Fasken is inviting students to apply for their scholarship programme, for the 2025 academic year.
Fasken will be awarding 2 scholarship, in honour of respected former colleagues, Lundi Gadla and Ricci Schwab Lyons.
- Ricci Schwab Lyons Scholarship: this scholarship will provide funding for Law students.
- Lundi Gadla Scholarship: this scholarship will provide funding for students at Nelson Mandela University (NMU), for studies in ANY field.

MORE ABOUT THE FASKEN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME
Ricci Schwab Lyons Scholarship:
- Named in memory of Ricci Schwab Lyons, honors her legacy as a distinguished partner and Chief Operating Officer at Fasken in Johannesburg. Each year, this scholarship is awarded to a law student who embodies the values Ricci championed. Her profound impact on both the firm and the community continues through this award, recognizing her lasting influence and dedication.
- During her tenure with the Firm, Ricci made an invaluable impact, particularly through her leadership in organizing community outreach initiatives. Her legacy of giving back lives on, inspiring our team to remain committed to serving and supporting those around us.
- The scholarship is intended to renew for the recipient’s subsequent year of study, provided all subjects are passed successfully.
- Upon graduation, recipients are expected to accept an articles of clerkship position at Fasken if one is offered. Should a recipient decline this offer, they will be required to repay the full scholarship amount to the Firm.
Lundi Gadla Scholarship:
- In memory of our dear colleague and friend Lundi Gadla, Fasken established a scholarship to honor his legacy. Lundi’s life was cut tragically short in February 2006, and this scholarship stands as a tribute to keep his memory alive and impactful.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FASKEN SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying for this bursary (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
Ricci Schwab Lyons Scholarship:
- You must be studying towards a Law qualification
- You must be registered for your 2nd, 3rd or penultimate year of study
- You must have maintained a minimum average of 65%, for all years of study completed
- You must be willing to participate in vacation work programs offered by the Firm
- You must have potential to become an effective attorney at Fasken
- You must demonstrate leadership skills
- You must be self-motivated
- You must take an interest in the community or in community issues
Lundi Gadla Scholarship:
- You must be studying at Nelson Mandela University (NMMU)
- You must be registered for your 2nd, 3rd or last year of study
- You must be in need of financial support for your studies
- You must displays leadership ability
- You must be motivated and hard-working
- You must have an interest in community issues/ projects
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE FASKEN SCHOLARSHIP
Note: there is no application form to be completed for this scholarship application – students need only submit the list of documents below to apply.
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your email application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

- Full academic record/ transcripts, for all years completed
