European Commission Blue Book Paid Traineeship Bursary 2026 – Closing Date: 29 August 2025 – Apply Now!

Hey awesome South African graduates! Ever dreamt of working in Europe, gaining incredible international experience, and getting paid while you learn? Well, get ready because the European Commission Blue Book Paid Traineeship for 2026 is calling!
While not a traditional ‘bursary’ in the local sense, this fully funded traineeship offers an amazing stipend and is a fantastic stepping stone for your global career, especially if you’re looking for opportunities beyond South Africa’s borders. It’s a prestigious five-month program in Brussels, Belgium, offering university graduates like you a unique chance to dive deep into EU policymaking and administration. Imagine working in a diverse, multicultural environment, developing valuable professional skills, and getting a firsthand look at how the European Union operates. Plus, it’s paid – giving you the financial support you need to make the most of this global adventure!
Who Can Apply?
Alright, let’s talk eligibility! This incredible traineeship is open to university graduates from around the world, including South Africa, who meet the following criteria:
- First up, you need to have completed a standard 3-year higher education degree (that’s minimum EQF 6 level), or an equivalent qualification. This basically means you need a complete Bachelor’s cycle. Make sure you have an official certificate or confirmation from your university ready, clearly showing your final grades and proof of that minimum EQF 6 level. You can learn more about EQF levels here.
- Next, they’re looking for fresh talent! You should not have more than six weeks of prior work experience with any EU institution, body, agency, delegation, or with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), or Advocates General at the Court of Justice of the European Union (EUCJ). This ensures the opportunity is truly for newcomers.
- Finally, languages are key! For the administrative traineeship, you need a very good knowledge of two EU official languages. One must be a working language (English, French, or German at C1 or C2 level – think fluent to native speaker!). Your second language needs to be at least B2 level. If you’re a non-EU national, like many of our South African readers, you only need one procedural language at C1 or C2 level.
If you’re eyeing the translation traineeship (in the Directorate-General for Translation), you need to be able to translate into your main language (normally your mother tongue), from two other official EU languages. Your main language must be one of the official EU languages, your first source language needs to be English, French, or German (C level or mother tongue), and your second source language can be any of the official EU languages with at least B2-level proficiency. You can check out the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages here to understand these levels better.
What Does It Cover?
What’s in it for you? Besides invaluable experience and global networking, this traineeship offers fantastic support!
- There are two sessions available each year, with approximately 1,000 traineeship positions in total per session. That’s a lot of opportunities!
- And here’s the exciting part: you’ll receive a generous grant of €1,493.36 per month. That’s a significant stipend to support your stay and experience in Brussels!
