AWJP/DW Akademie Gender + AI Fellowship Bursary 2025 – Closing Date: 20 August 2025 Apply Now!

Hey future changemakers! Are you a passionate woman journalist in Kenya ready to explore the cutting edge of AI and gender? We’ve got an exciting opportunity just for you! The AWJP/DW Akademie Gender + AI Fellowship is here to empower you with the skills to use AI for impactful, gender-sensitive reporting. This isn’t just a fellowship; it’s a chance to shape narratives, uncover crucial insights, and amplify underrepresented voices through the power of technology.

This is a 4-month program designed for women journalists in Kenya, running from October 2025 to February 2026. It dives deep into how Artificial Intelligence (AI) intersects with gender issues, especially how new technologies affect women and diverse communities in Kenya. The goal? To equip you with the tools and knowledge to use AI to supercharge your reporting – think analyzing huge datasets, spotting hidden patterns, finding biases, and giving a voice to those often unheard. You’ll focus on underreported gender dimensions in tech policy, data justice, surveillance, access, and inclusion. Each fellow will produce at least four high-quality journalistic pieces focusing on AI and gender in areas like governance, development, finance, education, health, and climate.

Who Can Apply?

This incredible fellowship is specifically for women journalists who meet the following criteria:

  • Professional Status: You should be a staff member at a media organization (TV, radio, print, or digital) in roles like reporter, editor, social media manager, or moderator. Freelance journalists are also welcome!
  • Location: You must be based in Kenya. Priority will be given to applicants from Nyanza, Western, Rift Valley (including Turkana), Central, and the Coastal Region.
  • Tech Savvy: You need to be proficient in English (both written and spoken) and have reliable internet access plus a laptop or desktop computer for online training and mentorship.
  • Publishing Commitment: A crucial part of your application is a letter of intent to publish from an editor or media outlet. You’ll need to commit to publishing/broadcasting your story within two weeks of submission and share analytics.
  • Passion for Gender + AI: You’ll need to demonstrate a strong interest and experience in covering gender and AI issues. Show us your motivation to create impactful journalism that champions the rights of women, girls, and underrepresented groups, and your eagerness to use AI for gender-sensitive reporting.
