Scholarship Description: The Ghent University is seeking a highly motivated and critical full-time PhD student in hearing research for an interdisciplinary research project ‘Portable Hearing Diagnostics: Monitoring of Auditory-nerve Integrity after Noise Exposure (EarDiMon)’ funded by the Ghent University Special Research Fund with a duration of four years.

The project aims to revolutionize hearing-health prevention and monitoring by establishing the relation between individual noise exposure levels and early signatures of hearing damage by using EEG signals.

The project is supervised by Professor Hannah Keppler, audiologist, and Professor Ingeborg Dhooge, otorhinolaryngologist, and in close collaboration with a PhD student with engineering background supervised by Professor Sarah Verhulst and Professor Guy Torfs from the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture.

Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must meet the following criteria:
The candidate must have a Master’s degree in Audiology, Medicine or Biomedical Sciences with the special interest in hearing research and EEG signals. Excellent research and clinical skills, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills in Dutch and English, are required. The candidate must be interested and willing to do research communication in the form of publications and active participation at national and international research conferences. The candidate must be able to work independently, but to take into account the deadlines of the whole project and hence being able to work in a team. The position will preferably start January 1, 2019, and at latest by Avril 2019. Review of applications will start in September, 2018 and continue until the position is filled.

Language Requirements: Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University.
