Assistant Manager Nursing (PNB4): Theatre & ICU

About the Role

As the Assistant Manager Nursing for Theatre & ICU, you will play a vital role in managing and coordinating specialized nursing care. You will be responsible for both the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the Theatre, and the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), ensuring seamless operations and excellent patient outcomes.

What You’ll Be Doing (Key Responsibilities)

Your main duties will include:

  • Managing and coordinating comprehensive, specialized nursing care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Theatre, and Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD).
  • Ensuring and maintaining high-quality care standards across all these critical services.
  • Supervising nursing staff to guarantee effective, efficient, and cost-effective patient care.
  • Implementing and monitoring infection control and prevention practices for all staff, including support and cleaning teams.
  • Overseeing the execution of healthcare policies, procedures, clinical guidelines, and operational plans to improve service delivery.
  • Managing disciplinary and grievance procedures at the required level, referring complex cases to the Deputy Manager Nursing.
  • Helping to implement departmental priorities and national core standards.
  • Monitoring and evaluating patient care, ensuring accurate data management.
  • Promoting and maintaining ethical conduct and professionalism among staff.
  • Fostering effective communication with staff, patients, multidisciplinary teams, and stakeholders.
  • Supporting professional growth and development for yourself and your subordinates.
  • Coordinating effective training and research initiatives within the units.
  • Contributing to the analysis, formulation, and implementation of nursing guidelines, practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensuring efficient utilization and supervision of human, financial, and material resources across cost centres.

Who We’re Looking For (Requirements)

To be considered for this vital role, you must meet the following criteria:

  • A basic nursing qualification (Diploma/Degree) accredited by the South African Nursing Council (SANC) in terms of Government Notice R425, or an equivalent qualification allowing SANC registration as a Professional Nurse.
  • A minimum of 10 years of appropriate and recognizable nursing experience after registering as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing.
  • Within those 10 years, at least 6 years must be appropriate/recognizable experience in a speciality (either ICU or Theatre) obtained after completing a one-year post-basic qualification in that speciality.
  • At least 3 years of the total experience must be at a management level.
  • A Diploma or Degree in Nursing Administration or Health Services Management.
  • Proficiency in computer literacy.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the Nursing process, procedures, and relevant public service acts.
  • Demonstrated decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict management skills.
  • Familiarity with the ideal hospital framework, norms and standards, and Batho Pele principles.
  • Good communication, supervisory, and analytical skills.
  • A basic understanding of human resource and financial management policies and practices, nursing strategy, and other relevant legislative frameworks.

Package & Benefits

This full-time position offers a competitive package of R 755 355.00 per annum, plus additional benefits.
