Lecturer (nGAP), Civil Engineering, EBE
The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town (UCT) is looking for a talented and passionate Lecturer in Structural Engineering and Materials. This is a full-time, permanent nGAP position starting 1 January 2026, open to South African candidates from designated groups.
About the Department
The Department of Civil Engineering at UCT is renowned internationally for its excellence in teaching and research across all major fields of civil engineering. This includes construction materials, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics, water quality, urban water management, and transport studies.
Structural Engineering and Materials is a key area within the department, offering undergraduate courses in mechanics of materials and structures, structural analysis, construction materials, and structural design (concrete, steel, timber). The department also provides various postgraduate programmes.
About the nGAP Programme
The New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) is a prestigious initiative designed to cultivate future academics. Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong passion for an academic career and have a proven record of high academic ability.
Key Responsibilities
- Actively contribute to teaching and research activities within the Department of Civil Engineering.
- Supervise postgraduate students.
- Teach undergraduate courses in mechanics of materials and structures, structural analysis, construction materials, and structural design.
- Potentially teach general civil engineering courses within the undergraduate curriculum.
- Conduct research, with a specific focus on modern concrete material technology.
Requirements
To be considered for this exciting opportunity, you must meet the following criteria:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
- A Master’s degree specialising in Structural Engineering and Materials with a minimum pass mark of 70% or higher.
Candidates who do not yet have a Master’s degree but are nearing completion of their PhD research may also be considered.
Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrable research and teaching experience in areas related to modern concrete materials technology and sustainable construction.
Remuneration
The annual remuneration package, including benefits, for a Lecturer is R941,184.
