Professor/Associate Professor (Faculty of Law: Department of Public Law) (Re-advert)
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is looking for a dedicated and experienced Professor or Associate Professor to join our Faculty of Law, specifically in the Department of Public Law. About the Role
As a Professor/Associate Professor in Public Law, you will play a crucial role in shaping the legal landscape in Africa and globally. Our department aims to produce cutting-edge research and highly capable students who will rethink and reshape the legal field. This is a permanent position based at our Auckland Park Kingsway Campus.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in various Public Law subjects, including Criminal Law, Jurisprudence, Constitutional Law, Interpretation Theory, and Environmental Law.
- Supervise postgraduate students for their dissertations and theses.
- Conduct and publish high-quality research in accredited local and international journals, book chapters, and books in the field of Public Law.
- Actively participate in administrative and committee roles within the Faculty of Law and the wider University.
- Mentor emerging staff members in the Faculty and Department.
- Attract and secure funding for teaching and research initiatives.
- Engage in community initiatives that advance societal impact.
Minimum Requirements
- A Doctoral degree in Public Law (with expertise in areas like Criminal Law, Jurisprudence, Constitutional Law, Interpretation Theory, or Environmental Law).
- At least 5 years or more of lecturing experience in the discipline of Public Law.
- A strong record of publications in reputable and accredited journals, book chapters, and books.
- Proven commitment to research-led teaching, research, and innovation.
- Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal).
- Demonstrated experience in postgraduate student supervision, including successful completions at the doctoral level.
Highly Recommended (Especially for Professor Level)
- An NRF Rating.
- Evidence of success in developing and securing external research grants.
Required Competencies and Attributes
- Excellent teaching skills and good interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach to colleagues.
- Strong planning and organizational abilities.
- Experience with integrating ICT in teaching and learning, including electronic assessment platforms (e.g., Blackboard and Moodle).
- Ability to manage large undergraduate modules effectively.
- Capable of working well and collegially with others, and within established processes.
- Punctual, innovative, proactive, and creative.
- High level of integrity and ethical conduct.
- Ability to work independently and in a team, even in a pressurised environment.
- Excellent writing and presentation skills.
- Comprehensive knowledge of various subfields of Public Law.
Additional Recommendations
- Experience lecturing large groups of students.
- Experience in curriculum development and transformation.
- Familiarity with blended learning techniques.
- Experience in compiling and developing study guides.
- Experience in media engagement and writing opinion pieces on matters relevant to the discipline.
- Knowledge of University policies, rules, and regulations.
