About the Department of Zoology
The Department of Zoology at UJ boasts a strong reputation for excellence in tertiary education and an impressive track record in diverse research fields. Our key research areas include aquatic health (toxicology, fish parasitology, fish histology and histopathology), freshwater ecology, cave and groundwater ecology, molecular genetics and systematics, palaeontology, and comparative respiratory morphology.
We are seeking an enthusiastic Lecturer to join our team, contributing significantly to both teaching and research in Zoology and/or Physiology.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging lectures in Zoology and/or Physiology at both undergraduate and Honours levels.
- Actively secure and manage internal and external research funding.
- Conduct impactful research and effectively supervise postgraduate students.
- Produce high-quality, accredited research outputs for peer-reviewed journals.
- Develop and maintain national research collaborations.
- Contribute to administrative duties as required by the Head of Department.
- Engage in community service and initiatives that advance the discipline.
Minimum Requirements
- A Master of Science (MSc) degree in Zoology, Physiology, or a closely related qualification.
- A proven record of research outputs published in accredited peer-reviewed journals.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising students at Honours or postgraduate level.
- Prior teaching experience at a tertiary education institution.
- Specialisation in a relevant Zoological or Physiological field.

Recommendations (Advantageous)

- A proven track record in securing external research funds.
- Possession of an NRF Y-rating, or being close to submitting for NRF rating.
