Additionally, the grant can cover expenses not typically covered by university funding, such as child care to enable academic women to fulfill their work responsibilities and research goals, addressing the traditional gender roles around caregiving in the home. Applicants are required to outline the research project scope, provide evidence of the costs involved, and detail how the funds will be utilized as part of the application process.

Why Capston Editing Wants to Help?

Although women are well-represented at the undergraduate and graduate levels in academia, they continue to be under-represented in higher academic positions due to various reasons, known as the “pipeline effect”. This effect is caused by the competitive nature of academia, which disproportionately affects women in their decision to pursue an academic career and their progress within it.

Academic workloads are often excessive and come with unrealistic expectations in terms of research output and unpaid overtime, with many academics working more than 40 hours a week, including some working up to 80 hours a week. This workload is particularly challenging for female academics due to social expectations and structural factors that result in them assuming a greater responsibility for parenting and caring roles. Despite some progress in recognizing the impact of caring responsibilities on academic work, there is a systemic failure to fully acknowledge how caring, especially motherhood, can significantly affect the career of female academics. Overall, there is a need for more awareness and support to address the challenges faced by women in academia with regards to caring responsibilities.

How can they Help?

Early career women academics often face challenges in balancing their various responsibilities and research goals, which may require them to work longer hours outside of normal working hours. While this practice is not encouraged, it is widely acknowledged and sometimes even expected in academia. However, women with additional childcare responsibilities may face barriers in performing this additional work, putting them at a disadvantage compared to colleagues who do not have similar responsibilities. Capstone Editing recognizes the increased difficulties faced by female academics in advancing and maintaining their careers, and aims to address this situation by providing practical and financial support through this grant. Overall, Capstone Editing aims to alleviate the challenges faced by early career women academics by offering them financial assistance.
