

Lecturer
The Centre for Film and Media Studies (CFMS) within the Faculty of Humanities is looking for a dedicated Lecturer in Media Studies to join their team in Cape Town. This is a full-time, five-year contract position, starting as soon as possible.
About the Position
This role is crucial for developing the Centre’s teaching, production, and research efforts in the exciting fields of digital and social media studies. You will be instrumental in shaping the next generation of media professionals.
What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)
- Support digital and social media training for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Lecture on digital and social media subjects within the Media and/or Film majors.
- Organise and manage production and academic courses.
- Guide students on their projects and dissertations.
- Contribute to the Centre’s research and creative projects.
- Participate in departmental and faculty administrative tasks.
- Get involved in socially responsive initiatives.
What You Need (Requirements)
- An MA degree in Media Studies, Film, or Journalism.
- An undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in multimedia journalism/production.
- Proven experience teaching multimedia production skills at a tertiary level in at least two of the following areas: photography, podcasting, videography, and post-production.
- Experience teaching large classes.
- Experience in visual design and web publishing.
Things That Will Help (Advantageous)
- Experience in supervising creative and research projects.
- Industry experience in multimedia journalism or digital and social media production.
- A track record of creative work in digital media.
- A PhD or active progress towards a PhD in Media Studies.
- The ability to develop the Centre’s digital media curriculum and coordinate academic and creative courses in this field.
- Active research interests in areas such as data journalism, data visualisation, advertising & branding, digital media studies, internet studies, virtual reality, Generative AI, gaming, ethics and regulation, or social media, demonstrated through conference attendance, publications, or creative output.
Salary
The estimated annual cost of employment for 2025, including benefits, is R 941 184.
